Tip #1: Ask for Help

Being locked out of your house is no fun, but if you live with roommates or a significant other, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get back into your home. The very first thing you should do upon being locked out is to get in touch with your roommates. Are they able to come home and let you in with their keys? Or will you have to wait until they are out of class or off of their work shift? While it may seem like a major inconvenience to ask your roommate to come home and let you in, it is much better than being stranded outside of your house for an extended period of time.

Another option is to reach out to your building’s landlord. More often than not, your landlord will have an extra key to your home or apartment, and depending on their location, they may be able to swing by and let you in.

Tip #2: Check The Perimeter for Unlocked Windows

While we would never recommend leaving your windows open when you’re not home, sometimes an open window can be a saving grace when you’re locked out of your home. When you get locked out of your home, check the perimeter of your building to ensure there are no windows open. On the chance that you find one, simply remove the screen and lift up the window so you can shimmy through it.

Tip #3: Try The Credit Card Trick

There is a method of lock-picking that you can try on spring bolts, and there’s a good chance you’ve seen this method in movies over the years. Known as the credit card trick, this method tends to work on most standard-issue doorknobs, and will not prove successful on doors with deadbolts.

If you find yourself locked out of your home, you can attempt to pick the lock with a credit card (make sure to choose a card that you don’t mind destroying, like an old gift card). Cards that are laminated tend to work well due to their flexibility.

  1. First, insert the credit card between the frame and the door. Try to navigate to the area of the door where the latch is located.
  2. Hold the card perpendicular to the door, and start gently pushing and wiggling the card.
  3. As you push the credit card, gently bend the card away from the doorknob. This will attempt to slide the latch back away from the door jam. If you’re not getting anywhere, try pushing your body weight up against the door while you bend the card.
  4. If you end up unlocking the door, congratulations! You’ve been successful at breaking into your own home.

On a more serious note, though, we encourage you to call a locksmith no matter what the outcome of the credit card trick. If you can break into your home easily, so can an unwanted intruder. Contact your local locksmith to schedule a time to upgrade your home’s locks.
